Chamber Singers is a select SSAA ensemble devoted to presenting high caliber performances featuring modern repertoire for treble voices. The ensemble performs extensively. Introduction to fundamentals of music including notation, scales, intervals, triads and rhythm. 2 credits.

Continuation of 113 including voice leading, modulation and secondary chords. Prerequisite: MUSC 113. 2 credits. Must be taken concurrently with MUSC 116.

MUSC115. Aural Skills I

The development of music reading and aural skills through recognition and execution, both written and oral, of pitch and rhythmic concepts. 2 periods; 1 credit. Must be taken concurrently with MUSC 113.

MUSC118. University Band

University Band is a performing ensemble made up of traditional concert band instruments (woodwinds, brass, and percussion).  The ensemble performs a variety of repertoire throughout the semester and performs 1 concert on campus towards the end of each semester. University Band is open to all students and community members with any level of prior experience playing a band instrument.  No audition is required.  Instruments are available for students to borrow for no charge (first come first serve). Not open to instrumental music majors. May be repeated for credit. FAES. AA. 1 credit.

An introduction to Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and computer music applications including music notation, sequencing, and other software. Pre-requisite: Music majors only or by permission of instructor. One period: 1 credit.

Study of phonetics and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Accurate pronunciation in English, Latin and Italian. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC141. Diction for Singers II

MUSC310. Music Entrepreneurship

Successful musicians, both classical and contemporary, have utilized entrepreneurial techniques, and entrepreneuriship is becoming a necessity in music education, performance, and other music fields. In this course students will encounter examples of successful music entrepreneurs and develop practical entrepreneuriship skills. 3 credits.

MUSC314. Jazz Improvisation

A theory/performance class designed to acquaint the student with improvisation in the jazz idiom. Technical competence on an instrument or in voice required. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. 1 credit.

MUSC321. Expressive Performance in Poet

This course is designed to develop performance methodologies by devising theatrical presentations through analysis and exploration of historical and contemporary poetry, lyric plays, opera, art songs, musical theatre and other written forms of music and theatre. No expertise in reading music notation is necessary. 3 credits.

MUSC322. Exploring African - Amer Voice

This course examines the solo vocal literature of African - American composers, who are often excluded from resource materials related to American art songs and operas. Through listening to audio recordings, examining the poetry/texts and exploring musical scores, students will discover historical composers as well as those still living, broadening their knowledge and understanding of African - Americans’ contributions to American classical vocal music. Students will utilize literary and musical concepts and historical perspectives (economic, political, cultural, racial) to assess the intent of the poets (in writing the texts) and the composers (realized in their art songs and arias) which were often based on societal and cultural trends that inspired the creation of the works. 3 credits.

MUSC325. Music as an Agent of Change

Inquiry into one or more specific episodes in World History in which music functioned as a significant agent of cultural change. No expertise in reading music notation is necessary. Pre-requisites: Completion of FAES pillar. 3 credits, PAES

History of the art music of Western civilization from 1750, with examples. Development of literal, interpretive, critical and evaluative understanding of the literature of music. MUSC335. Piano Duet & Duo-Piano Lit

Study and performance of piano ensemble music. Includes both piano duet literature and duo-piano literature. Required of B.M. piano performance and piano pedagogy majors; open to others with permission of instructor. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC339. Whose Art is It? Art & Music

Both art and music are a means of expression that involve content, content that reflects, analyzes, appreciates, incites and celebrates culture. But the line between appropriation and appreciation is not clear and is becoming murkier in this age of connectivity. In this Perspectives course, student will explore these relationships by investigating historic and contemporary art and music (through considerations such as Western artists 'borrowing' from Non-Western sources and Non-Western artists working within Western canons) and how artists, musicians amd various cultural groups perceive such work. Students will collaboratively select artists and musicians to research and create a visual work inspired by their research that plays with the line between appropriation and appreciation, determining who 'owns' the work and the role of intent. Pre-requisite: Completion of FAES pillar. 3 credits. PAES. AA.

 A study of the value and practical application of integrating the arts across all content areas of the curriculum with a focus on music. Students will gain an understanding of the role of the creative process in the classroom and will investigate the various means of expressing ideas, emotions and images through the use of music, art, movement and theatrics. Chamber Singers is a select SSAA ensemble devoted to presenting high caliber performances featuring modern repertoire for treble voices. The ensemble performs extensively. MUSC411. Flute Ensemble

Study and performance of a unique body of flute ensemble literature in a variety of styles each semester. Open to all majors without audition, though prior experience in an ensemble is required. Elements of note reading, rhythm reading, instrument technique, and flute literature will be explored in a rehearsal context leading to public performances. 1 credit; may be repeated for credit.

MUSC412. Arranging

Study and practice of arranging in different voice and instrument combinations with attention to style, range, form, and difficulty. Prerequisite: Music 214. 2 periods; 2 credits.

MUSC418. University Band

University Band is a performing ensemble made up of traditional concert band instruments (woodwinds, brass, and percussion).  The ensemble performs a variety of repertoire throughout the semester and performs 1 concert on campus towards the end of each semester. University Band is open to all students and community members with any level of prior experience playing a band instrument.  No audition is required.  Instruments are available for students to borrow for no charge (first come first serve). Open to returning non-music majors as well as junior and senior music majors. May be repeated for credit. 1 credit.

A survey of intermediate-level piano literature through listening, performing, and reading. Required of piano pedagogy concentration, recommended for piano performance concentration. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC441. Elem Music Methods & Materials

Study of materials, techniques, and methodologies appropriate for teaching music to elementary-aged children. Involves peer-teaching experiences, coursework, and a 6-week field experience in the public schools. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Preparation Program. 3 credits.

MUSC442. Choral Methods & Materials

Study of methods and materials appropriate for secondary school choral music with emphasis on organization, festivals, curriculum, and vocal/choral techniques. Prerequisites: 341. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC443. Instrumental Methods Materials

Study of all the band and orchestral instruments. Embouchure and technical development; rehearsal techniques; fundamentals of marching, materials. Prerequisites: Music 341. 2 credits.

MUSC444. Marching Band Fundamentals

Marching band fundamentals class for instrumental majors who plan to teach on secondary music level. Involves classwork, observation at neighboring high schools during pre-game and half-time shows, and writing marching shows to be appropriately coordinated with music. Pre-requisite: MUSC 341.1 credit.

MUSC445. Piano Pedagogy I

Techniques and materials of teaching piano individually and in groups. Observation and teaching of demonstration groups. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC446. Vocal Pedagogy

Study of the principles of voice production and voice teaching. Laboratory with beginning voice students. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC447. Piano Pedagogy II

A continuation of Piano Pedagogy I with the inclusion of advanced topics such as class piano for music majors and practice techniques for the advancing student. 2 periods. 2 credits.

MUSC449. Show Choir Techniques

Skills and concepts needed to organize, administer, plan, teach, and conduct show choirs, musicals, jazz choirs, and a cappella choirs. Highlights techniques of management, fundamentals of stage production, and fundamentals of choreography and movement for singers. Prerequisites: MUSC 341. 1 credit.
