The U.S. Department of Education randomly selects about 30% of all FAFSA applications for a process called verification.

Verification is done in order to ensure the accuracy of information submitted by students and families on the FAFSA.

Once a student is selected, schools are required to request additional information to complete the verification process.

If your FAFSA was selected it is not a reason to be concerned. It is a normal part of the application process for approximately one-third of all financial aid applicants.

Be sure to submit all requested documentation well before our May 30, 2024 deadline in order to remain eligible for certain types of gift aid.

Verification Selection

After submitting the FAFSA you will be presented with a FAFSA Submission Summary, which is a summary of your FAFSA responses and further information about your application.

Your FAFSA Submission Summary will indicate that your FAFSA has been selected for verification with an asterisk next to your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), along with a statement in the section titled “Comments about Your Information.”

If you are selected, our office will also notify you through your Longwood email address.

You will then log into your myLongwood portal to see what additional information is required.

After logging in to myLongwood:

  1. Select Financial Aid Status/Eligibility
  2. Select Student Requirements
  3. Review your Unsatisfied Requirements

Check Your Longwood University Email

There are some situations where a financial aid counselor will reach out to you directly about a specific verification item that is needed. In this case, there may not be a requirement posted. Please pay attention to your Longwood University email address as this is typically how we communicate with students.

When submitting documents, please write the student’s Longwood ID number clearly on each page.

Allow 2-3 Weeks

Verification Process

Once all requested information is received please allow 2 – 3 weeks for the Office of Financial Aid to complete the verification process. Keep an eye on your Longwood email. Sometimes we must request further information, even after the initial documentation has been submitted.

Prospective Students

Prospective students will receive an ESTIMATED financial aid offer in the mail.

If the verification process results in a change to your financial aid eligibility, an email will be sent to your Longwood email address instructing you to log in to your myLongwood portal and review your updated financial aid offer.

Current Students

Current students will receive an email when your financial aid is ready to view and accept through the myLongwood portal. Current students will only receive a financial aid offer once the verification process is complete.
