The Time Machine Experiment: Women Writers and the Politics of Gender

A Native American, Brit, Canadian, and an American take a time machine into a bar....In a new twist on an old joke, how might their differing experiences and cultures influence their understanding of what it means to be a woman? Join students from ENGL 362 to discuss their research on the impact of influential woman authors like Margaret Atwood, Sylvia Plath, Sharon Creech, and Flannery O'Conner on what it mean to be a writer and a woman. Find out how this important writing reflects gendered identities across cultures and times, from the 19th century to today.

 

Robin Ochs: Speaker, Presenter, Activist

Robin Ochs is a professional speaker and workshop leader, award-winning activist, and the editor of the 42 country anthology, Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World (2nd edition) and the Bi Women newsletter. Her writings have been published in numerous bi, women's studies, multicultural, and GLBT anthologies, and she has taught courses on LGBT history and politics. An advocate for the rights of people of ALL orientations and genders to live safely, openly and with full legal equality, Robyn's work focuses on increasing awareness and understanding of complex identities, and mobilizing people to be powerful allies to one another within and across identities and social movements. This event is being sponsored by PRIDE with the help of Women's & Gender Studies.

 

Embracing Real Beauty

Stacy Nadeau, former model for the Dove Real Beauty Campaign, will discuss issues surrounding body image. Stacy is a brave Dove "Real Woman" who stood proudly along
with 5 other women in her underwear in the summer of 2005 as part of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. The campaign has received unprecedented national media coverage and has been included in more than 85 national stories. Stacy has appeared on everything from a ten minute Today show segment, to CNN and a talk show circuit normally reserved for movie stars: Ellen, Dr. Phil, Tyra and Oprah... twice! This event is cosponsored by the Office of Student Health & Wellness, the Office of Fraternity & orority Life, and Women's & Gender Studies.
