The holidays are almost here! The following are a few tips and reminders that you may find helpful as we all look forward to the holiday break:
*Your office computer should be turned off while you are on break (with the exception of those who keep their machines powered up for remote access purposes); therefore, the automatic updates provided by McAfee will not run. Here are some precautions that you can take to avoid getting a virus on your computer when you return to the office. When you first boot up your computer the McAfee software will update so that your virus protection is current. Allow this process a few minutes to complete before browsing the Internet, checking your email, opening attachments, or downloading files.
*Prior to opening your email messages, check your Inbox for any security notices from User Support Services or the Information Security office. You can also check the Information Security website at http://www.longwood.edu/infosec for the latest alerts.
*The start of a new year is a great time to evaluate your files to ensure that all Longwood mission critical files are backed up to a network share. ITS does NOT back up files that are stored on the hard drive of your office computer or laptop. Data stored on network storage space IS backed up on a nightly basis. All faculty and staff have been allotted 10 GB of network storage space. If you need assistance saving files to your network space, please feel free to contact User Support Services.
*A vacation message on your email account insures that those sending you email will know that you are out of the office. Instructions on how to set up a vacation message on both Mac and PC are available at http://www.longwood.edu/usersupport/41914.htm.
*Changing your voice mail to inform callers of your time away from the office is easy! Simply log into your voice mail and press 82, press 1 for your external greeting, press 5 to record the new greeting.
Please be aware of the following support options during the holiday break:

A Help Desk technician will respond to requests between the hours of 10 am and 12 noon.
The Digital Education Collaborative (DEC) will be closed December 19th – January 6th.
