New Chair of Search Committee

A Message to the Longwood Community from Rector Helen P. Warriner-Burke

Marge Connelly has recently notified us of her new position with Barclaycard. First, let me express publicly my congratulations to Marge-I have already done so to her directly-on the occasion of this notable appointment.  Along with the new responsibilities will come much excitement in operating on the international scene, an opportunity that I sincerely appreciate.  Marge's new position and title also bring added value to her membership on Longwood's Board.

I am pleased that Marge has chosen to continue participation on the BOV and the Presidential Search Committee, and I am sure that she will make every effort to be with us as much as possible.  I also understand her decision to step down as chair of the Search Committee, for the demands of her new responsibilities would make the primary leadership role difficult.  We know, however, that we will benefit from her frequent participation and wise counsel for both of her Longwood affiliations.

I also want to say that I most sincerely appreciate Barry Case's agreement to chair the Search Committee.  Among numerous other attributes, Barry has had the experience of eight years on the BOV and a term as rector, and he has already sat in the driver's seat of the Search Committee as its vice-chair.  He will most certainly be up to the task as he moves up officially.  Thanks, Barry.

Presidential Search Firm Selected

A Message to the Longwood Community from Rector Marge Connelly, Chair of the Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee

I am pleased to announce that the executive search firm of Academic Search, Inc., has been retained to assist Longwood University in hiring its next president.

Academic Search started in 1976 with the goal to provide all colleges and universities with highly professional, individually focused search services modeled on best practices in other sectors. For over three decades, Academic Search has built a dossier of premier clients and earned a reputation for integrity, efficiency, and confidentiality. It is the country's largest and oldest search firm specializing exclusively in higher education.

Leading the Longwood University search will be Dr. Jessica S. Kozloff. She is President Emerita of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, where she served as President for 13 years. During her presidency, she served on the NCAA Presidents Council, the Board of Directors of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and served as Chair of the Middle State Commission on Higher Education. Prior to joining Bloomsburg University, Dr. Kozloff served as vice president for academic and student affairs for the State Colleges of Colorado, a system of four regional campuses. She has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Board of Visitors and the Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee look forward to working with Dr. Kozloff on the presidential search.

Letter from the Rector

March 27, 2009

SUBJECT:  PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH PROCESS

To the Longwood University Community:

It is my pleasure to inform you of how the Board of Visitors intends to proceed with the search for President Cormier's successor.  The Board of Visitors has appointed a Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee to assist the Board in the search.  I will chair the Committee and Barry Case, a member of the Longwood University Board of Visitors, will serve as vice-chair of the Committee.  Brenda Atkins will serve as the administrative coordinator for the Committee.

The 14 members of the Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee are:

  • Ms. Marge Connelly, Chair, Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee; Rector, Board of Visitors
  • Mr. Barry J. Case, Vice-Chair, Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee; Board of Visitors
  • The Honorable Otis L. Brown, Board of Visitors
  • Dr. Helen Warriner-Burke '56, Board of Visitors
  • Mr. Chin Han "Hank" Kim '90, Board of Visitors
  • Dr. McRae Amoss, Chair, Faculty Senate; Professor of French, Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences
  • Dr. Roy Creasey, Executive Committee of Faculty Senate; Assistant Professor of Management, College of Business and Economics
  • Dr.  Pamela Tracy, Faculty Representative to the Board of Visitors; Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Cook-Cole  College of Art and Sciences
  • Dr. Deneese Jones, Dean, College of Education and Human Services
  • Mr. Troy Austin, Director of Athletics
  • Mr. Mike Sheffield '89, President, Longwood University Alumni Board
  • Dr. Ken Marcus '82, President, Longwood University Foundation Board
  • Ms. Nancy Scruggs '80, Chair, Longwood Staff Advisory Committee
  • Ms. Caitlin Revene, SGA President, Student Representative to the Board of Visitors

A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued to identify a search firm to assist the Committee in its work.  A search firm should be hired during the April-May timeframe.

The Presidential Search and Screening Advisory Committee will engage the University in seeking input for Longwood's next president.  There will be a series of meetings with various campus constituent groups and there will be a place on the Presidential Search web site, which will go live on March 30, for comments.  There will be a link on the Longwood University home page that will take you to the Presidential Search web site.  In addition to providing a place to submit comments, the site will provide information on the presidential search, including a Projected Timeline, and will serve as a resource to keep you updated.

The Committee will select up to three finalists to recommend to the Board of Visitors.  Once finalists are identified, they will be invited to the campus so that they can directly experience the campus environment and have the opportunity to meet the Longwood community.

The Board hopes to announce President Cormier's successor in early 2010.   With Dr. Cormier's vision, leadership, and persistent drive for excellence, it will be a daunting task to identify Longwood University's next president; but, the Board is confident that the search process, through diligent and collaborative work, will be successful in its effort to select a president who shares the values, mission, and vision of Longwood University.

Sincerely,

Marge Connelly, Rector
Longwood University Board of Visitors
