The purpose of this policy is to establish a standard for responsible use of appropriately manufactured space heaters under temporary circumstances.
The use of portable electric space heaters will only be permitted in faculty and administrative offices during times when the temperature in an office drops below 68 degrees F. Only electric space heaters with an automatic cut-off switch are permitted to be used. Since these are auxiliary heating devices, they must be unplugged at the end of the day or shift as an added precaution against malfunction or overheating. Use of extension cords with electric space heaters is prohibited. Departments seeking to use a portable electric heater must obtain the prior approval of the Environmental Health and Safety Officer.
