The History, Political Science & Philosophy Department offers teacher preparation training for history and social science secondary education licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Our department and university faculty offer a wide range of expertise in all areas of American and World history and the social sciences. Course requirements for the major ensure future teachers valuable opportunities for preparation in the content areas. Pedagogical coursework enables our majors to engage effectively in diverse school communities through practicum experiences and student teaching. Our graduates are now teaching throughout the United States.
In addition, our majors seek to serve the growing community of graduates from the program. To that end, they contribute to a growing body of work that includes innovative lesson plans and teaching strategies accessible to students in the major as well as alums of the program. Our graduates give back to the program by sharing their expertise and experiences with students in the methods class.
For information on the requirements for certification and licensure, please review the university catalog.
These checklists should be used as a guide only. The current catalog is the official and final guide to the classes necessary for certification and licensure.
