Off Campus Housing

Off Campus Release Process

Farmville Farmville, Va

Longwood is a residential institution that features residence life education, focusing on student learning and personal development as part of its distinct academic mission. Therefore, students are required to live in Longwood-managed housing unless the Office of Residential and Commuter Life (RCL) approves their release to off campus housing.

If your student wishes to be released to off campus housing they must fill out the request for release form. In order for your student to be released to off campus housing, they must meet the following credit requirements:

  • 89 earned credits
students with 89 or more credits will be given permission to be released
  • 56-88 earned credits
students within this range may or may not be released

Students falling in the 56-88 credit range will be credit ranked. Students with more credits will have a better chance of being released. The housing office designates a certain number of students who can be released based on how many students will be living in the residence halls. This number fluctuates considerably from year to year.

After the application period, students who are selected to be released will be notified and required to attend an Off Campus Orientation session. This is a 1-hour presentation about off campus options and things to know about finding a place to live. This orientation is held generally in the fall.

Places to Live

Farmville offers many individually owned houses and apartments for rent in close proximity to Longwood’s campus, most of which are in walking distance. Students will be given the opportunity to meet with local landlords at the annual housing fair in the fall, typically held just before Thanksgiving break. Your student should not sign a lease until the housing office has officially released them.
