Longwood Online Technology Institute

Request for Proposals for 2009 - 2010 Awards

Purpose

The Longwood Online Technology Institute (LOTI) is a faculty development program designed to enhance teaching and learning at Longwood University and expand the flexibility and reach of a Longwood education.  The LOTI provides faculty with the skills and technical support necessary to develop quality online courses or programs and is required for all faculty who teach online for Longwood.  The Institute fosters exploration of innovative approaches to designing online experiences that promote a learning community, learning outcomes and utilization of multimedia technology.

New for 2009- 2010

This year there will be a change in the way LOTI is delivered.  In Fall/Spring there will be a Beginning LOTI and in May we will have Advanced LOTI.

Beginning LOTI

[Note:  ALL FACULTY ARE INVITED TO APPLY TO ‘BEGINNING’ LOTI EVEN IF THEY HAVE PREVIOUS LOTI EXPERIENCE AS WE TRANSITION INTO THIS REVISED FORMAT]

This institute is designed for those faculty members who have never had LOTI training and would like to develop a course for either online or hybrid delivery OR those returning for a second institute. (If this is your second LOTI, you can spend the time focusing on some of the tools you did not use in your first session. However, if you would prefer to opt out of a second Beginning LOTI and attend Advanced LOTI, please contact us for an application)

The Beginning LOTI will take place during Fall and Spring term with two face to face meetings and the rest online through a series of modules.  These modules will enable you to both participate in and then develop a wide variety of tools that will support high quality instructional practice.  You will have most of the spring term to develop your course, take any workshops needed to increase your skills, and work individually with someone on your course development.  Your completed online or hybrid course must be available on Blackboard by the second week of April.  LOTI instructors will review your course and provide assistance or feedback as needed.

If you have not participated in LOTI and plan on offering an online or hybrid course anytime between Summer 2010 and Spring 2011 you will need to apply for this LOTI.

Advanced LOTI

For faculty who have completed two Beginning LOTI (or have completed one and applied to opt out of the second Beginning LOTI) and would like to develop another course OR enhance an existing course, there will be a week-long Advanced LOTI in May, 2010.  This institute will consist of mini-lessons and in-class individualized support to develop high quality, technologically robust online or hybrid courses.  Participants will demonstrate progress by completion of an evaluation of their course at the beginning and end of the training.

Calls for Advanced LOTI training will go out in the fall semester.

BEGINNING LOTI PROPOSAL Click Here

Faculty members interested in participating in Beginning LOTI will submit a 2-3 page proposal that provides the following:

  • Background/rationale for the project

  • Identification of course format (hybrid or online) and reasons for choosing that format

  • Course/Program goals and learning outcomes specific to teaching this course online or hybrid.  (The objectives on your approved course syllabi must be used in your course.  These goals and objectives address what you'd like to accomplish in the online or hybrid environment in addition to your regular course objectives.)

  • Ideas for meeting these learning outcomes in the unique online setting, including:  Specific online activities and Outcome evaluation

  • Projected faculty/student technical assistance, equipment, materials and skills required to reach project outcomes

Proposals should be attached to a completed cover sheet (see below).

Please include a copy of the course syllabi with this proposal.

Please submit a signed hard copy of the cover sheet for the Beginning LOTI, the proposal, and the course syllabi by August 21, 2009 to the Graduate & Extended Studies Office, Ruffner 132, and send an electronic version to perryjr@longwood.edu. .  Notification of awards will be made by September 4, 2009.
