National Digital Map Library
From the GeoStat Center at UVA. Maps of all 50 states -- by state boundary, county boundaries, major cities, hydrography, and natural parks and forests.

National Geographic Maps
Maps and resources from National Geographic Society.

TerraServer
Provides scalable satellite and aerial photography of the entire surface of the world.

United Nations Maps
More than 100 regional and country maps (.pdf). Details include primary and secondary cities, rivers, roads (though not named), and railroads. Not all countries represented notably Brasil, Mexico, Nigeria, and most countries in Western Europe.

U.S. Census Gazetteer
Contains links to Census maps (Tiger) as well to a wide variety of 1990 Census data. Search by city name (incorporated only) or ZIP Code.

Database of nearly 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. Search by feature name, state, county, elevation. From the U.S. Geological Survey.

Geographic Names Server
Official repository of standard spellings of all foreign places, sanctioned by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
