Awards and Scholarships

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi's ongoing commitment to excellence is reflected in its scholarships and awards programs. More than $1 million is awarded each biennium to outstanding students, Phi Kappa Phi members and chapters through the Society's various awards competitions.

While many grants and scholarships require active membership in the organization, ALL students are eligible for the Study Abroad Grant. Please review the Study Abroad Grant application for full eligibility requirements.

 

Fellowships

Every year, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study.  Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide wards. 

Completed fellowship applications are due to the Longwood Chapter no later than April 1st of each academic year. 

Who is eligible to apply?
You are eligible to apply if you meet ALL of the following:

  • open to all active Phi Kappa Phi members or those who have accepted membership by June 30th the year you apply;
  • have applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post-baccalaureate program of study during the coming academic year;
  • cannot have successfully completed 10+ credit hours of graduate study or its equivalent on or before April 15th of the year you apply

What is the deadline?
The completed application and supporting materials must be submitted the Longwood University chapter by April 15th at 11:59 PM CT of the year you apply. Materials submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

Selection Criteria.
Selection is based on the applicant's promise of success in graduate or professional study, including academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement and career goals, and acceptance at an approved graduate or professional program.

Study Abroad Grants

Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year. 

Who is eligible to apply?
You are eligible to apply if you meet ALL of the following:

  • you attend an institution with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter;
  • you have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. We do NOT round-up - meaning a 3.74 GPA does not qualify;
  • your study abroad program begins between May 1st of the year you apply and June 30the of the following year;
  • you have applied to or been accepted into an accredited study abroad program before April 1st of the year you apply and provide a letter of acceptance or a letter confirming your application, on official letterhead, as part of your application.

What is the deadline?

What if I have not yet received a letter of acceptance from my accredited study abroad program? If you have applied for your study abroad program but have not been accepted by our application deadline, you must include a letter from your study abroad director/coordinator on official letterhead verifying the program and your submitted application. Study Abroad Grants will NOT be awarded without an official letter of acceptance from the accredited study abroad program.

When will I know if I am a winner?
Winners will be notified by June 1st of the year you apply.

When will I get my grant?
Once we have received your letter of acceptance and all of the requirements have been met, your grant will be mailed directly to you no earlier than July 1st of the year you apply and no later than September 1st of that year.

 

Love of Learning Awards

Love of Learning Awards help fund post-baccalaureate studies and/or career development for active members. One hundred forty-seven awards at $500 each are awarded annually.

Who is eligible to apply?
Open to all active (dues current) Phi Kappa Phi members who have completed their baccalaureate studies by the application deadline.

Literacy Grants

Literacy Grants of up to $2,500 each are available to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and individual members to fund ongoing literacy projects or to create new initiatives.

Who is eligible to apply?
Literacy Grants are available to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and members. The project director applying for the grant must be an active (dues current) Phi Kappa Phi member.

How do I know if I am an active member?
Call the Society Headquarters at 800.804.9880, ext. 17.

Can I still apply if I already received a grant in previous years?
Yes. Projects can be funded for two consecutive years. Funding is not available for a third year, but project managers are encouraged to apply again in year four.

When will I know if our grant has been selected?
You will be notified in June of the year in which you are applying.

When will I receive the grant?
Once we have received your letter of acceptance, your award will be sent to you by August of the year in which you are applying.

What is the deadline?
The application should arrive at the Society Headquarters on or before April 1st of the year you are applying. Any applications received after this date will not be considered.

Is there a deadline to complete the project?
Yes. Projects should be completed by June 1st of the next year after it is awarded. A report, receipts, and any leftover funds should be submitted to the Society Headquarters by July 1st of the next year after it is awarded.

 

Phi Kappa Phi Scholar & Artist

The Phi Kappa Phi Scholar and Artist Award honor individuals who demonstrate the ideals of the Society through their activities, achievements, and scholarship. Each awardee receives a $1,000 honorarium, an active-for-life membership and a recognition citation.  Each award is given once per biennium.

First presented in 1974, the Scholar Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research, and public service. In 1983, the Artist Award was established to recognize the achievements of those who, in addition to their outstanding scholarship, have displayed talents in the broad realm of the arts–creative, graphic, performing, visual, and/or fine arts.
