7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
At Jarman Auditorium
The concert features Inscriptions, a choral-orchestra work composed by professor emeritus Dr. Gordon Ring based on four texts from the prologue to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. This work features Dr. Chris Swanson, tenor, along with student soloists Kara Johnson and Angela Carter, alumni Steven Brown ’16, and an orchestra comprised of Longwood faculty, students, and community members.
Following Inscriptions, University Choir, Chamber Singers, and Camerata Singers will perform. Highlights include Warrior, written after the broad daylight murder of a woman by her stalker; My feets is tired, with words taken from the letters of Martin Luther King, Jr.; Let Me Listen, a text that exhorts us to quiet our own indignation on the behalf of others and allow them to tell their own story, in their own words; and The Apple of Daddy’s Eyes, a setting of a Taiwanese poem that captures a father’s last words to his child as he prepares to flee his homeland to avoid persecution for his acts of advocacy.
The concert is free; parking is available in Wheeler Lot. Come as you are and bring a friend! Email with any questions - mcdermottpd@longwood.edu.
