Graduate Degree Concentrations

Counselor Education

The Counselor Education program offers five (5) tracks for college graduates interested in preparing for counseling roles in a wide variety of settings from elementary schools to mental health centers. Students will receive solid grounding in the theoretical frameworks of counseling and how they translate into individual and group interventions tailored to individual client needs. Graduates will assist clients in self-discovery, personal growth, and in making healthy lifestyle choices. A teaching license is not required for admission to this program. All tracks culminate in a supervised field experience.

C&I Specialist/Algebra & Middle School Mathematics

The Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Algebra & Middle School Mathematics concentration is designed for the classroom teacher who wants to improve instructional skills as well as expand knowledge and skills in mathematics through Algebra I. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License or equivalent from another state and have at least two years teaching experience including mathematics curriculum.

C&I Specialist/Elementary & Middle School Mathematics

The Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Elementary & Middle School Mathematics concentration is designed for the classroom teacher who wants to improve instructional skills as well as expand knowledge and skills in mathematics. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License or equivalent from another state and have at least two years teaching experience including mathematics curriculum.

C&I Specialist/Music

The Music Curriculum and Instruction Specialist concentration offers three tracks: lecture-recital, teacher research and thesis. All three tracks are designed for musicians currently teaching at all levels in the school system who wish to improve teaching skills and deepen their knowledge in a particular area of music. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License or equivalent from another state.

C&I Specialist/Spanish

The Spanish Curriculum and Instruction Specialist concentration is designed for the classroom teacher who wants to improve instructional skills as well as expand knowledge and skills in Spanish. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License or equivalent from another state.

C&I Specialist/Special Education General Curriculum

This pathway in special education provides strategies for effective teaching of students with special needs in the general curriculum K-12. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License or equivalent from another state.

Educational Leadership

The Educational Leadership degree concentration is for teachers who hold at least a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional License or equivalent from another state, have taught successfully for at least two years, and wish to pursue a career in school administration. Students are provided preparation for administrative and/or supervisory roles in public and private schools.

Elementary Education

The Elementary Education master’s degree is for Longwood Liberal Studies Elementary or Middle School Education graduates who want to remain for a fifth year of full time study to be more prepared to enter the teaching profession. This degree is also for the practicing teacher who wants to update and enhance their instructional skills. This program allows you to apply best practice in Elementary Education while working side-by-side with educators and Longwood faculty in the schools.

Elementary Education PreK- 6 Initial Licensure

The Elementary Education PreK-6 Initial Licensure concentration is designed for individuals who hold a baccalaureate degree in any discipline and wish to become an elementary teacher in grades preK-6. Passing scores on Praxis I OR equivalent SAT/ACT scores OR passing scores on the VCLA plus Praxis I math or SAT/ACT math, are required for admission.

Health & Physical Education

The Health & Physical Education concentration is designed to enable the post-baccalaureate student to be better prepared to become an educational leader in the profession. This masters degree is structured to permit the graduate student to complete the entire program in one calendar year (a summer session and two semesters). Successful completion meets current eligibility requirements for the Virginia Postgraduate Professional License.

Literacy & Culture

The concentration in Literacy and Culture is designed for teachers who wish to: (a) upgrade their knowledge and skills for teaching literacy in the PreK-12 classroom; (b) be an instructional specialist; and/or (c) work in alternative support programs. It follows both the Standards for Reading Professionals published by the International Reading Association (IRA) and endorsed by the accreditation agency NCATE, as well as the Virginia Department of Education Licensure Regulations for School Personnel. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License or equivalent from another state and have at least two years teaching experience.

School Library Media

The School Library Media degree concentration is designed for individuals who hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional License or equivalent from another state and who want to earn a Master of Science in Education with a concentration in School Library Media. Coursework prepares individuals to meet the varied roles required of a school library media specialist in the 21st century - the roles of information specialist, instructional partner, teacher, and program administrator.

School Library Media PreK-12 Initial Licensure

The School Library Media PreK-12 Initial Licensure concentration is designed for individuals who hold a Baccalaureate degree in any discipline and wish to become a school library media specialist. Passing scores on Praxis I OR equivalent SAT/ACT scores OR passing scores on VCLA plus Praxis I math or ACT/SAT math, are required for admission.

Spanish or ESL PreK-12 Initial Licensure

The Spanish or ESL PreK-12 Initial Licensure concentration is designed for the individual who holds a Baccalaureate degree and wishes to become a teacher of Spanish or English as a Second Language. Passing scores on Praxis I OR equivalent SAT/ACT scores OR passing scores on VCLA plus Praxis I math or ACT/SAT math, and an undergraduate major or minor in Spanish or be a native speaker of the language with a bachelor's degree are required for admission.

Special Education General Curriculum/Liberal Studies Five Year

The Special Education General Curriculum/Liberal Studies Five Year master's degree is open only to Longwood students who have successfully completed all requirements for the Longwood Liberal Studies/Special Education undergraduate curriculum including 41 credits of General Education, 47-50 credits in the Liberal Studies major and 41 credits of professional education as described in the Longwood University undergraduate catalog.

Special Education General Curriculum K-12 Initial Licensure

This pathway is designed for individuals with a baccalaureate degree who wish to work toward the Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement to teach students with special needs in the general education classroom. Passing scores on Praxis I OR equivalent SAT/ACT scores OR passing scores on VCLA plus Praxis I math or ACT/SAT math, are required for admission..

Within the Department of Education and Special Education there are sixteen areas of concentration leading to the Master of Science degree, four areas of concentration leading to a graduate professional endorsement, and two certificate programs.
