Not sure you want to pursue your major after college? That’s okay.

It’s easy to tell yourself, “I majored in this area, so I have to work in this field.” However, what many students, recent grads, and parents don’t realize is that your major doesn’t dictate your career path. So, if you’re having second thoughts about the path you choose way back in freshman year, relax.

It’s okay to graduate with a degree that doesn’t directly tie to your career path. While it might feel like you’ve invested thousands of dollars and countless hours in a major that probably won’t relate to your career, chances are, you’ll be able to leverage the knowledge and/or experiences you gained over the last few years.

You’d be surprised at how many majors actually transfer to different fields. For example, just because you majored in journalism doesn’t mean you can’t move into a career in marketing. Don’t limit yourself just because your major doesn’t line up with a certain career path perfectly.

The first step is to figure out what career path you want to pursue.

If you know exactly what you want to do, great! Your first step is to figure out what you have to offer and where you need to upskill so you can move into that career path. What skills do you already have that you can leverage in this career? What skills do you need to gain in order to do the job?

If you don’t know what career path you want to move into, that’s okay! But where do you go from here? You spent all of that time and energy on a direction you don’t think will pan out after all. Where do you go now?
