Getting a job requires a little more effort than just writing up a generic resume. In fact, there are probably a few things you haven’t thought about that can give you an edge over the competition. Here are a few things you need to find a job after college (in addition to your resume).

A strong network

Networking is one of the best ways to land a job after college. If you have someone who can vouch for you during the hiring process, employers will pay more attention to you than they would if you had just submitted a job application. Never underestimate the power of a strong network!

You might have heard that cover letters are dead. This is extremely false. There are plenty of employers and recruiters who still read cover letters. In fact, your cover letter allows you to share your story and connect with the company on an emotional level. If you write a compelling cover letter that’s tailored to the company to which you’re applying, you have a better shot of standing out (in a good way) to recruiters.

LinkedIn profile

In this day and age, if you don’t have a professional online presence, you’re considered “behind the times.” Set up your LinkedIn profile so recruiters can find you with an online search using keywords related to your target industry. Also, leverage the platform as a networking tool by connecting with professors, classmates, employees at your favorite companies, representatives at career fairs, and more.

Business cards

As a student, you might not think you need a business card. However, this is a great tool that can help you stand out. You don’t need a job to have a business card. Use it as a tool to share your contact information and showcase your top skills - it’s much easier to carry these in your bag than a resume!

An interview outfit

The last thing you want to be doing before a job interview is rushing around town trying to find the “perfect” interview outfit the night before. You need to use that time to prepare! So, make sure you already have a business professional outfit ready to go in your closet.
