It’s easy to get bogged down with your class schedule during college. However, it’s important to make room for career-related activities, too. One of the best things you can do during college is get an internship (or a few internships). Here are a few key benefits of adding an internship to your course load this semester:

Relevant work experience

Obviously, the first thing you think of when you think of getting an internship is getting real work experience you can add to your resume. This is obviously a HUGE bonus because it can take your resume from “meh” to “amazing.” Plus, it will help you market yourself to future employers.

School credit

Many programs allow you to get school credit when you do an internship while in college. So, essentially, you’re using your internship as part of your education. This can help you graduate sooner, if you wanted, or make room for you to take other classes you’re interested in.

Professional connections

Gaining professional contacts in your field while you’re in school could be challenging, especially if you’re on the shy side. However, working an internship while you’re still in school is an easy way to meet future colleagues who work in your industry and potential clients down the road. Plus, you’ll get more comfortable with your networking skills and feel more confident jumping into the working world.

Potential for a full-time job

Not every internship has the potential for a full-time job after college, but there are plenty of internship opportunities that do offer this. If you work hard, make an effort to get to connect with your team, and show potential, you could earn yourself a job down the line.

Balancing an internship with a full class schedule can be a challenge, but the benefits of adding an internship to your course load are huge.  If you need more help finding an internship, book an appointment with Longwood University Career Services.
