Choosing a career path can be a little overwhelming. Thankfully, it’s not permanent. You don’t have to be tied to one career for your entire life. So, hopefully that takes a little pressure off of the situation.
Unfortunately, there are many people out there who struggle with what career path to select first. Although they know it’s not set in stone, it’s still a challenge to figure out what’s a good first step. There are so many choices out there. Which one should you try?
One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing a career path is not looking at what they already have to offer: their transferable skills.
Whether you majored in something for four years and decided it’s not right for you, or you’ve been working in the same industry for 5-8 years and feel it’s time for a change, the first thing you should consider is your transferable skills. What skills do you ALREADY have that can transfer to different industries or jobs?
Understanding this will help you figure out your next career move AND allow you to market yourself more effectively to employers. So, if you’re having trouble trying to decide where you should go next in your career, take a step back and look at yourself. What do you have to offer? Which of those transferable skills do you want to leverage in your next job?
Identifying those transferable skills is the first step toward choosing a career path you’ll excel in and love.
