Trying to build up your network but don’t know where to look? Your alumni network is a great place to start. Whether you’re still in college, recently graduated, or have been out for a while, you can always find a way to leverage your college network. But before you can do that, you need figure out who’s in your network (there are some you may have forgotten about!).
A great way to get organized is to think about the groups, clubs, or organizations were you involved in during college. You might not realize it, but this is a great place to start when trying to build a strategic network.
Think about every group you were involved in during school. Make these your categories. Then, under each category, list out everyone you knew in the group. Pretty soon, you’ll have a whole list of people with whom you can reconnect.
After you have your list, reach out via email or LinkedIn to reconnect. Remind them how you know each other and why you wanted to reconnect. Start a conversation - ask them how they’ve been, what they do now, if they’ve been back to the school for any events, if they still talk to anyone in the group, and so on.
This is a great way to leverage old connections you forget you had. You already have things in common and you already have a pre-established relationship - why not make them an active member of your network? Try this exercise this week!
