Karyn Keane is the recipient of the 2018-2019 SNVC Undergraduate Scholarship. She was awarded this honor based on her on-campus and off-campus involvement. Karyn wrote that, as a member of the Comier Honors College, she is encouraged to, “strive for excellence in all I do and always seek opportunities to help.”
Her outreach includes being a volunteer at FACES, Farmville’s local food bank, serving as a peer mentor to fellow students, and recruiting prospective students to Longwood University. In academics, she worked with a faculty mentor on a literary research project to impact English literature accessibility. She also studied the impact of the rhetoric of public memory and its cultural influence upon a National Museum of the United States. This project permitted her the ability to gather and better understand marginalized groups of people through personal stories. She wrote that “by conducting research on bringing more voices into conversation, I applied the ideals of citizen leadership to my academic career.”
Her service also includes serving as Publicity Chair for the Cook-Cole College Student Advisory Board; Vice President of the National Society of Leadership and Success; an Eco-Rep for the Office of Sustainability; and a Reader for the Office of Student Research.
She is truly making a difference to make this world a better place by her personal actions. We are proud to have selected her as the recipient of this scholarship.
