MR. COPELAND, a 1986 graduate of Longwood with a bachelor's degree in business administration, began his career as a sales associate for Colonial Marble Products, a family-operated business in Petersburg, Va. He joined Masco Corporation in 1989 as a regional sales manager for their StarMark brand kitchen cabinets. In 1991, he founded his first company, Smart Marketing, Inc., an independent manufacturer's representative firm providing cabinetry, countertops, and plumbing products to Virginia contractors and kitchen dealers. After seeing an opening in the market a year later, he began offering his existing kitchen clientele custom built, high powered computers to run demanding computer aided design (CAD) programs for kitchen and bath layouts and information management. In 1997, he split the two business units and officially founded Velocity Micro as a premium PC manufacturer, specializing in high end workstations and gaming systems. Velocity Micro has now grown into the largest independently owned boutique PC manufacturer in the US.

In February 2002, a national review established Velocity Micro as a leading provider of custom PCs and a nationally recognized brand among enthusiasts. Velocity Micro has since won over 50 national Editors' Choice awards from major publications such as PC Magazine, Cnet, PC Gamer, PCWorld, Computer Shopper, and MaximumPC, as well as PC Magazine's coveted "Best of the Year" awards in 2004 and 2008, and their Reader's Choice Award for Service and Reliability in 2007. In addition, Velocity is a worldwide leader in launching the latest technologies, and was the first company in the world to launch dual core processors, quad core processors, and Windows Vista.

Now targeting mainstream users as well as gamers, enthusiasts, and the research and scientific communities, Velocity Micro desktops, notebooks, and peripherals can be found at nearly every major electronics retailer or etailer in the country including Best Buy, Fry's, Amazon, Staples, Walmart, Costco, Newegg.com, and Target.

Mr. Copeland earned the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America in 1982 and has worked in several volunteer roles with local Scout units in Richmond. He is an active supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Hera Foundation, and several other charitable organizations.
