Lower Division Gen Ed Goals VCCS & RBC

Remember, if you earn an Associate of Arts and/or Sciences Degree and are admitted to Longwood, you will automatically meet all Lower Division General Education Goals, enter with junior status, and all of your credits earned for that degree will transfer.

Students transferring from other schools should plan an academic program as close as possible to these required goals.

Students should be aware that some majors require specific courses to meet general education goals so they should refer to the Longwood Catalog.

Goal 1. Seminar (1 credit)

  • No VCCS or RBC equivalent, but you do not have to take it if you took a similar course at another institution or if you transfer with more than 24 credits. Students whose only college credit was earned as Dual Enrollment, must take the Longwood Seminar.

Goal 2. Freshman Writing (3 credits)

  • VCCS - ENG 111
  • RBC - Engl 101

Goal 3. Literature (3 credits)

  • VCCS - ENG 241, 242, 243, 244, 246, 251, 252, 253, or 255
  • RBC - Engl 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, or 206

Goal 4. Artistic Achievement (3 credits)

  • VCCS - ART 100, 101, 102, 111, 112, ENG 211, 212, 215, 216, 217, 218, MUS 121,122, 225, SPD/CST 130 or SPD/CST 141
  • RBC - Art 231, Musc 103 or Thea 201

Goal 5. Math (3 credits)

  • VCCS - CSC 110, 155, 200; MTH 142, 146, 151, 152, 157, 158, 163, 170, 173, 174, 176, 240, 241 or 273
  • RBC - Math 101, 110, 201 or 217

Goal 6. Natural Science (4 credits)

  • VCCS - BIO 101, Chem 101, PHYS 100, 101, 102, 111, 121 or 201, 231, 241
  • RBC - Biol 101 & 101L, Chem 101 & 101L or Phys 101

Goal 7. Western Civilization (3 credits)

  • VCCS - HIS 101 or 102
  • RBC - Hist 101 or 102

Goal 8. Social Sciences (3 credits)

  • VCCS - HIS 121, 122, PLS 130,135, 211, 212, PSY 200, 201, 202, SSC 101, 102, 107, 205, SOC 200, 201, 202, 268, ECO 120
  • RBC - Hist 201, 202, Geog 101, Govt, 201, Psyc 201, 202, 210, Socl 201 or 204

Goal 9. Diversity (3 credits)

  • VCCS - HIS 112, 255, REL 230, 231, 232, 237, PLS 140, SOC 210/211 or 212
  • RBC - Reli 209

Goal 10. Foreign Language (3 credits)

  • VCCS - FRE 201, 202, GER 201, 202, SPA 201 or 202 and any other foreign language at the 201 or 201 level.
  • RBC - Fren 201, 202, Span 201 or 202

Goal 11. Wellness (2 credits)

  • VCCS - PED 101 or 102,116 (if 2 hour courses)
  • RBC - PE 107, 109, or 117
