Each semester, students in Longwood University's College of Business and Economics complete an internship, a graduation requirement that sets Longwood apart from most universities. This education beyond the classroom aids students in gaining valuable insight into the working world, in receiving hands-on experience in their fields, and in growing personally and professionally by facing real problems and ethical choices.

But perhaps one of the most important benefits is that the internship requirement is paying off with jobs. A recent survey of graduates shows that 83 percent of the students who graduated from the College of Business and Economics in 2011 are employed. Half of these students indicated that their internships helped them secure their current positions, adding that their internships also gave them an advantage in landing jobs in business-related fields.

Longwood students scored top-notch internships that turned into full-time positions at organizations including the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Gantt Insurance Agency and Norfolk Southern. Their supervisors at these organizations have high praise for the students and the internship program:

"Working with Longwood University for our internship program is a great collaboration.  The university's McGaughy Internship Program does an excellent job with developing students to be an effective part of a team. And, with our important work for America's economy, we need those high-caliber students who are well-prepared and able to exceed expectations in the workplace." - The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond

"I am impressed with the performance of our Longwood intern. From day one, he has shown up with a go-get-it attitude. I have put him through some difficult and challenging situations, and every time he has come through with no problems. ... It is very evident that Longwood has done a great job teaching their students and preparing them for the real world." - Gantt Insurance Agency

"We believe that this internship program benefits both students and businesses alike by giving the student real-life experience and providing the business with a valuable resource during the internship." - Norfolk Southern Corporation
