Relay For Life is an annual event of the American Cancer Society (ACS) that supports research and education, honors survivors and remembers those lost to cancer. The theme this year is "Send Cancer Straight to Jail, Don't Let it Pass GO!" Events include a survivor's reception, luminaria ceremony, information about cancer prevention and treatment, fundraising, entertainment and contests. The final Relay Rally of the year will take place on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in Lankford Student Union Ballroom. Donations will be collected at this event.

In 2011, Relay For Life of Longwood raised more than $65,000 in donations, a 30 percent increase over the previous year. Relay For Life of Longwood has achieved significant increases every year since in its inception in 2003. More than 900 participants and 66 teams are registered for this year's event. Organizers have set a goal of 250 luminarias to be placed in honor or memory of loved ones.

We are an AS CAN Club Relay for Life eventIn addition to its fundraising success, Relay For Life of Longwood is the first collegiate organization in Virginia to earn the designation ACS CAN (Cancer Action Network). "I am so proud of everything that the Longwood community has accomplished with Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society this year," said Emily Bacalis, chair of the 2012 Relay For Life. "It was a goal of mine when we started in August for Longwood to become the first ACS CAN collegiate Relay For Life event in Virginia, and I am so glad that we accomplished this. Our students are dedicating themselves in many different ways in the fight against cancer. I can't wait to see the results of all of their fundraising efforts following the event."
