Just in time for Election Day, Longwood professor Michael Mergen's series Vote and some of his other civic-themed work is featured in the Time magazine's online photo essay feature "Lightbox."

The popular online magazine Slate also featured Mergen's Vote series in its online photo blog.

Mergen's series focuses on unique polling places around the country, including pizza shops, funeral homes, a roller rink, diners and garages of private homes. The inspiration from the series came to Mergen, assistant professor of art/photography, during the 2004 presidential election, when he was working as a photojournalist for Bloomberg News in Philadelphia. He saw a barbershop and private home that were being used as polling places, and the idea of exploring offbeat locations for voting booths was born.

The work was previously featured in the February issue of Harper's magazine, which published 12 of the photos. The complete series, photographed over two years, includes polling places in eight states. All of the photos are horizontal, taken with a panoramic camera.

The Vote series is on exhibition at Longwood Center for the Visual Arts through Nov. 24 and at Locks Gallery in Philadelphia through Dec. 8.
