Longwood University’s Relay for Life nets $68,445 in donations
September 8, 2011
The American Cancer Society recently notified Longwood University that its 2011 Relay for Life event raised $68,445 in donations. Relay for Life at Longwood has achieved significant increases every year since its inception with fundraising for the 2011 event exceeding the 2010 total by more than $18,000.
Dr. Maureen Walls-McKay, associate director of Longwood's Counseling Center, advises the student committee that organizes the Relay for Life each year. "Relay is truly a campus and community event that involves partnership with the Student Union and Involvement, Public Safety, Facilities, the Town of Farmville, and local businesses," said Walls-McKay. "Fifty-four teams, involving 948 participants, took part in the 2011 Relay for Life event at Longwood. This type of result is one of the many reasons why Longwood is indeed a special place."
Plans for the 2012 Relay for Life event, scheduled for April 20, are underway. To learn more and get involved, contact Walls-McKay at wallsmckaymj@longwood.edu or 434.395.2409.
