Longwood hires full-time sustainability coordinator

Longwood University now has a full-time sustainability coordinator.

Kelly Martin, a 2007 Longwood graduate who had been assistant coordinator of the Campus Master Plan, started her new job Sept. 25. She is no stranger to sustainability. "When I worked in the Campus Master Plan office, I researched what colleges and universities are doing in sustainability, I made recommendations and suggestions, and I helped incorporate sustainability goals into the Campus Master Plan," she said.

Martin already is working on, among other things, an initial campus sustainability assessment, updating the Green Campus web site, and calculating the university’s carbon footprint.

Martin started working at Longwood in May 2007 as a part-time intern in the Campus Master Plan office. She became a full-time employee of that office after graduating in August 2007.

Longwood in May 2008 received a $138,000 grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund to support the consolidation of Longwood’s existing sustainability efforts into an expanded comprehensive program. The three-year grant is funding Martin’s position, among other things. "Longwood has made a commitment to take over the position after three years and keep it going," Martin said.

Martin, a Virginia Beach native who attended Longwood as a non-traditional student, earned a B.S. in sociology. She entered Longwood in fall 2005 after attending Virginia Wesleyan College for about three years and briefly attending Old Dominion University. After graduating in 1996 from Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach, she also held several jobs, including working in banking for four years. "I’ve done a variety of things in my life, and I feel like I’ve found my niche," she said.

Longwood’s sustainability initiative previously had been coordinated by Louise Waller, space planning and real property manager.
