Longwood's Larissa Tracy will discuss medieval torture on NPR's "With Good Reason"
February 25, 2010
Longwood's Larissa Tracy, assistant professor of medieval literature, will be featured on the National Public Radio show With Good Reason during the week of February 27 through March 4.
Getting Medieval: Torture Through the Centuries
Passionate debate about the ethics and effectiveness of torture is nothing new. Medieval historian Larissa Tracy (Longwood University) says torture was actually outlawed for most of the Middle Ages, and when it was used, there were strict rules governing how and when it could be applied. Although there were many depictions of torture in medieval art and literature, the torturers were always portrayed as villains.
